At the time he asked me this, we were 5 hours into the workshop, so I had gotten to know him a good bit. Now, I should point out that the workshop was aimed at teaching people how to interact & connect with their subjects...yet all during the day, he was asking nothing but technical questions. SO technical, in fact, that sometimes I simply had no answer.
I later learned that he has a career in network administration & programming. To be honest, I thought it went hand-in-hand with the sterility of his photography (not that everyone who works in an IT field are passionless automatons, mind you...but it made sense, in his case).
So in a continuing effort to understand him, and perhaps awaken the inner artist that remained hidden in him, I started asking what his passions in life were. He thought about it for a while, but honestly couldn't come up with a solid answer.
I then said to him, "Name 5 songs that can bring tears to your eyes".
To which, he said, "I doubt I could even name one".
"Well, there is your problem", I said.
The poor guy simply could not...feel. I cannot even begin to imagine what that Empty Void must be like. I sometimes curse myself for feeling too much...but I wouldn't change that about me. It fuels what I do.
He asked me, "can you name 5 songs that do that?".
I responded with, "I can name hundreds".
Here's my Top-5, as of lately:
- "There is None", by The Working Title
- "Matching Weight", by Trespassers William
- "Put a Record On", by Unkle Bob
- "Carry Me Ohio", by Sun Kil Moon
- "Say When", by The Fray
Feel free to share yours

fiona apple - sullen girl
metallica - no leaf clover
blur - coffee and tv
smetana - vltava
Does it count if THAT brings a tear to my eyes?
Oddly enough, IT background as well. Started in Art, ended up in IT, quit, went back to school for design and now just started doing that finally. Still no songs will make me cry though... except New Country... that's just horrible.
But her version of Flame trees and Perfect now are probably my favourite/saddest.
But it's an interesting point you make, and I'm finding this so much more now I'm working in public areas daily - there are few people that do more than function. It's scary!
It's so weird/sad/pathetic to think that fictional characters in movies have more passion than most people do in real life.
I think that's what's so lovely about you and your photos. It's obvious you have passion and depth. :3
Maybe that's why so many people love following work like yours too - I know I follow it because I want to learn to convey that depth in my work, but perhaps your images are allowing people to feel things that they normally wouldn't in normal life.
It reminds me of Mark Rothco (or Rothko, can't remember) and his colour landscapes - literally just blocks of colour, yet people break down and cry when they see them. It's amazing. I think people see reality in images/art and it flips a switch.
Anyway... I'll stop ranting. haha!
